Kowtow, Fitzroy
What a privilege to bring the much-loved New Zealand brand, Kowtow to Melbourne. The first Australian flagship store can be found amongst the wonderful hustle and bustle of Gertrude Street, Fitzroy and boy does it fit in, perfectly!
The mid 19th century building’s large glass windows invite shoppers to step on in. The abundance of light showcases the high ceilings and reveals the transformation created by MDT Building Group. The space is now adorned with rails and racks of fairtrade and consciously made clothing. A strip out, demolition and structural modifications have created a larger entrance between the two main rooms allowing for ease of both movement and light.
The new concept store required carpentry and plastering works; sanding, and polishing of the solid timber floors, and a detailed upgrade of the amenities.
In addition, an installation of feature sandstone tiling and a limewash textured paint on the walls have lifted the space. The fitting rooms have been equipped with illuminated timber framed ceilings with paper lining which provide an illuminating effect.
Further enhancements of solid timber joinery including shelving, display units, cabinetry and a distinguished counter table all feature beautifully in the retail space.
Respecting the philosophy of the Kowtow brand, so too do the selection of timber species – Spotted Gum, sourced from certified and sustainable managed forests. Natural and environmentally friendly materials also include the linen curtains, Bremworth wool rugs and washi paper. Combining to diffuse the feature lighting within the joinery and timber sealed with finishes that are low emission.
A real bonus of this small but mighty store is the rear courtyard – a space that can be used for a variety of reasons and certainly adds to the wonderful ambience that the brand exudes.
MDT Building Group has nailed the creation of a “timeless, minimal, natural and well-crafted aesthetic” that was the true vision in bringing the bricks and mortar store to Melbourne.
